It is recognized that the myriad of health harms that come from the use of tobacco is not attributed to nicotine or even tobacco, but rather the smoke produced from the combustion of tobacco. A key component of tobacco harm reduction is simply informing the public of the relative risks of smoking vs. the use of non combustible nicotine or smokeless tobacco. Smokers who switch or supplement their cigarettes with smoke free products can drastically improve their health.
vapor products, electronic cigarettes, mods or electronic nicotine delivery devices (ENDS), call them what you like, but they all operate on the same principle. A battery operates a heating coil or “atomizer” which gently heats up a solution that may contain nicotine, carriers, and flavoring agents and aerosolizes the solution into a vapor. According to the Royal College of Physicians “The hazard to health arising from long-term vapour inhalation from the e-cigarettes available today is unlikely to exceed 5% of the harm from smoking tobacco.” In other words, vaping is at the very least 95% safer than smoking. Unfortunately there is a wide misconception that smokeless tobacco is no safer than smoking, when in fact if smokers switch to smokeless tobacco they can expect to reduce health risks up to 99%. There is also a myth that smokeless tobacco will cause oral cancer, but the primary risks of oral cancer comes from:
- Human Papillomavirus (HPV)
- Heavy Consumption of Alcohol/Alcoholism
